The
water quality standard for sulfate (SO4) has a direct connection to
wild rice in Minnesota. Based on some Statewide assessments of the occurrence of wild rice across the State, it was determined that wild rice did not occur in waters with sulfate concentrations greater than 10 mg/L. Based on this relationship, the MPCA has established a water quality criteria for sulfate as 10 mg/L; this standard applies only to waters of the State used for production of wild rice and only during periods when the rice may be susceptible to damage by high sulfate levels.(7050.0224 SPECIFIC WATER QUALITY STANDARDS FOR CLASS 4 WATERS OF THE STATE; AGRICULTURE AND WILDLIFE).
